Thomas Andrew Hillock Drysdale

 

Born in St. Andrews. Son of Andrew and Margaret Drysdale, of St. Andrews. Educated at Madras College, St. Andrews. Sergeant, Pilot, 999577, 107 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 30/06/1941. Age 21. On the 30th June 1941, seven Blenheim aircraft of 107 Squadron took off from R.A.F. Great Massingham in Norfolk to attack the seaplane base on the German island of Sylt. During the operation, Blenheim R3801, piloted by Sergeant Drysdale, was shot down and crashed into the sea. The crew of three were killed, and were initially buried in Westerland Cemetery, before being re-buried in the Kiel War Cemetery, Germany. Sergeant Drysdale is buried in Grave 3. G. 6. He is commemorated on the Madras College War Memorial 1939-1945, on the St. Andrews War Memorial 1939-1945, and on the Scottish National War Memorial Roll of Honour. In 2012, students from Madras College visited his grave in Kiel.

The archive is fortunate to have the diary of Thomas Drysdale from 1941.
