Former Teacher Biographies

Dr. Ian D. Gilroy MA (1922 - 2011), Rector
 

 

Ian Gilroy was born 16th December 1922 and passed away 19th September 2011 aged 88. He was associated with the Episcopal Church  and a thanksgiving service was held in his memory on 24th September 1911.

He came to Madras College as Rector in 1975 from Mackie Academy in Stonehaven, succeeding John Thompson. He retired in Summer 1985.

In 1997 he gave a lecture to the Open Association of St Andrews University about the school and its foundation by Dr Andrew Bell. This was used as the basis of a booklet entitled 'The Rev Dr Andrew Bell, Founder of Madras College'.

The Abbey Times for 9th May 1975 reported:

NEW RECTOR
Mr Gilroy, at present Rector of Mackie Academy, Stonehaven , will be taking up the post of Rectorof Madras College at the beginning of next session, when Dr. Thompson retires. Mr Gllroy is a specialist in English and History, having once been Principal Teacher of English at Morgan Academy In Dundee. He Studied at St Andrews where he gained the degree of Master of Arts with Honours.
After a quick look around both buildings of Madras Collepe, Mr Gllroy says that he is impressed by the design and style of the school, and by the internal conditions.
Mr Gilroy has three daughters, the eldest of whom is twenty-three, and gained her MA at the University of Aberdeen. She is now concerned with the administration of libraries and museums. Another daughter, aged twenty, is studying English and French, also at Aberdeen, while the youngest, who is still at Mackie, will most probably be coming to join the 6th year in the South Street building. Mr Gilroy's hobbiles include sailing, gardening and fishing. The Abbey Times hopes that his relationship with staff and with pupils will be happy and profitable.
