Former Teacher Biographies

Alexander Inglis B.Sc. (1911 - ), Depute Rector
 

Alexander Inglis was born in Methil and started his education in the infant school there. He proceeded to Buckhaven High School and St Andrews University in 1929 where he studied chemistry.

He graduated B.Sc. with honours in 1932 and entered the teaching profession in South Primary School, Lochgelly. After four years he moved to teach Maths and Science at Kirkcaldy High School. After two years the war intervened and he antered the RAF as a member of aircrew but his science knowledge was recognised and he became a Radar Technical Officer in 1942, finally being in charge of Radar Technical Training in Group Headquarters.


After the war he returned to teaching at Kirkcaldy High School and one year later in 1947 became head of Strathmiglo Primary School. Next he became headmaster of Auchterderran Secondary School in 1951. Whilst here he became involved in educational research projects including Fife Tests of Ability and Primary Schemes of Work and was the author of The Teaching of Handwriting, which had two teacher manuals and six pupil books.

He moved to become headmaster of the Burgh School in St Andrews in 1956 and when this became part of Madras College in 1963 he became Depute Rector, a post he held until retirement in 1973.

He was President of the Fife branch of the EIS from 1971 to 1973, President of the St Andrews Business Club in 1965 and an Elder of Martyrs' Parish Church.

He had two sons and a daughter.
