Nony Mordi (1987 - )

Nony was born in Nigeria and come to Scotland and attended Madras College.  She was Girls' Champion in the Madras 2003 and 2004 Sports and went on to achieve success in athletics.

She was a complete novice at the event before the Fife Schools Championships in June 2004 yet went on to win the competition in a new championship record.

The Cupar athlete had originally planned to do just the hurdles and long jump at the Pitreavie event before being persuaded by a team manager to try her hand at something new.

Mordi said: 'I just wanted to give it a try. I had no idea what my abilities were.  'I hadn't really trained for it. Without wanting to sound cocky, it just seemed to come naturally.' Since then Mordi has won the Scottish Schools' title, equalling that championship's record, and the Scottish Under-20 Championships in August 2004 with yet another age group record.

The 17-year-old travelled to Bendigo in Australia the following month to compete for Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games, just six months after her first attempt at the triple jump. She was placed fourth in the triple jump and won a silver medal in the 1600m relay event.

Since then successes have included:
  • 2006 – 3rd AAA Indoor U20 Championships triple jump, 3rd AAA U20 Championships triple jump
  • 2008 – 1st BUSA Championships triple jump, 1st BUSA Indoor Championships triple jump, 3rd Norwich Union World Indoor Champs Trials triple jump. Competed for Great Britain at the 2008 European Cup in Annecy.
  • 2009 - 1st Aviva UK Indoor Championships triple jump, Scottish closed Senior champion.
  • 2010 - Scottish Senior triple jump champion.
  • 2012 - Scottish Senior triple jump champion.
  • 2013 - Scottish Senior triple jump champion.
  • 2014 - Scottish Senior triple jump champion.
Since 2009 Nony qualified as a doctor and suffered injury (stress fracture of a shin) which kept her from competing in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
