James Smith was the only son in a family
of six. His father was a painter who had a business where Low & Co
now have their shop (now Tesco in Market Street).
He died
very suddenly, supposedly of appendicitis but this disease was not proved
at that time. His parents wished to keep his memory. As golf had
been his hobby they gifted the shield to the school, to be played for
annually.
After the parents died the money to buy
the medal was presented by his sister Jenny who was a teacher in Dundee.
After her death the prize ceased to arrive.
The conditions of play for this shield
were approved by the St Andrews School Management Committee.
The players are not to exceed 12 years of
age according to the school leaving dates. The final has to be
played on the last week of May.
