The Aikman Medal |
This was presented by the Aikman family(of Aikman & Terras, the grocers which used to be opposite the school) to commemorate their son James' win in the first Junior Golf Tournament held in the town. This event took place in 1872 and James went round in 118 strokes. This was some achievement when you consider that rounds well over 120 were not uncommon in the in the 'Open' (the gutta-percha ball was no longer a novelty but was still being hand washed). The plate on which the winners are recorded on the back of the medal box must be a replacement for there are still players in the town who are proud past winners of the medal from the mid-twenties. There is a problem here for the hallmarks on the plates and the cross are the same! 2-476 |
