TROPHIES

The pupils of St Andrews Burgh School completed their competition over the Jubilee Course on Monday evening for the Jock Hutchison Cup and the Smith Shield.  In previous years these trophies were competed for separately. The competition for the cup was confined to pupils over 12 years of age and the shield to pupils under 12 years.  This year, however, it was decided to allow the younger pupils to compete for the cup, and that decision has been justified; for on Monday evening, John Grant, who is under 12, won both trophies. He has a neat style, and shows much promise as a golfer. There was an entry of 18 players, and play was over nine holes of the Jubilee Course, the best two of three rounds counting.  With scores of 44 and 51 - 95, John Grant secured both trophies. Other scores in the cup competition were - Fulton Ferguson 48 and 50 - 98; Wm Edie 49 and 50 - 99; Fred Crisp 99; David Barns 105;  Bertie Lamond 106; W. Chisholm 106; Greig Cadger 111.  The other scores in the shield competition were Fulton Ferguson 98; Wm Edie 99; Harry Louden 103; Fred Crisp 104; D Burns 105; Bertie Lamond 106; W Chisholm 106; and G Cadger 111.  The cup was presented  a number of years ago by "Jock" Hutchison, ex-Open British Champion, to encourage the boys of his old school to excel in golf, and the Smith Shield was presented by Mrs George Smith in memory of her son, who died while he was a pupil at the school.

John Grant was admitted to the Burgh School in September 1923.

It is of interest to note how this medal came to be returned to the school. In 2015 a passer-by saw something glinting in the cobbles beside the garages in Tom Morris Drive. It was donated to the school when no one could be found to claim it.  A report was published in the St Andrews Citizen.
