David Murray was born in 1829 in Anstruther and died in 1907 in London. 
He made his fortune as a Draper Merchant in London and Adelaide, Australia. 
The Murray Library in Anstruther (now a hostel) was founded in 1908 using funds donated by him.
His father William Murray had been Provost of Anstruther.
